Dr. Graham Newstead called the meeting to order at 2:00 pm, Sunday, May 1, 2005.

  1. Meeting Minutes
  2. Consensus: Approve the ICCP meeting minutes of May 9, 2004.

  3. Reports to ASCRS Executive Council
  4. Dr. Graham Newstead distributed reports submitted to the ASCRS Executive Council for its spring meeting in 2004 and 2005.

  5. ICCP Website
  6. Dr. Richard Billingham reported that the ICCP has established an independent website; however, at present, it can only be accessed through the ASCRS website. It is believed that the ICCP will eventually move from the stewardship of the ASCRS into a more independent function. Links = www.internationalcoloproctology.org or www.fascrs.org

The following is currently on the ICCP website:

    • An introduction to the ICCP
    • Scholarship information
    • Training programs throughout the world and the requirements – in process
    • Database of all the known national coloproctology organizations
    • Links to websites of international coloproctology organizations
    • Listing of international meetings and meeting dates

The following will be added to the website:

    • Speakers / Teachers
    • Outreach opportunities
    • Journals

Consensus: Update the database on an annual basis as well as the listing of meetings for each organization.

Consensus: Include links to Dr. Graham Newstead’s article "A World of Colorectal Surgery, Newstead GL. Dis Colon Rectum, 2004 Oct; 47(10): 1750-1" and Dr. Stanley Goldberg’s article "Globalization Comes to Colon and Rectal Surgery. Dis Colon Rectum, 2005 March; 48(3):424-428, on the ICCP website.

  7. Colorectal Training Programs
  8. Part of the mission of the ICCP is to maintain a database of all colorectal training programs throughout the world as well as assist countries who wish to develop a colorectal training program.

Dr. Philip Douglas reported that there are 16 approved colorectal programs in Australia. There is no formal training program in the UK. Dr. Nichols is trying to establish a European surgical board in colorectal surgery. Dr. Parellada reported that Mexico has 3 colorectal training programs and Chili has one.

  9. Promotion of Scholarships and ICCP
  10. Consensus: Communicate by mail as well as electronically to all international organizations as well as ASCRS international members informing them of scholarships available. Also promote scholarships in journals of other organizations (ie. Lancet, British Medical Journal etc).

Dr. Wolff proposed that members of the ICCP personally write to international colleagues informing them of the scholarships.

Consensus: Contact the World Health Organization to see if there is an opportunity to partner with them by having the ICCP represent the specialty.

Consensus: Query candidates to see how they heard about the scholarship. Ask candidates what the best means of promoting the scholarships in their country. Determine how many scholars have become members of ASCRS.

  11. Scholarships
  12. The committee discussed the lack of response for Travel Scholarships which requires support and funding from international coloproctology organizations. Dr. Schoetz proposed that since the committee’s budget is $18,000, the ICCP can determine if there should be several Fellowship Scholarships.

Consensus: Grant Fellowship Scholarships to Dr. Narimantas Samalavicius from Vilnius, Lituania and Dr. Eloy Espin Basany from Barcelona, Spain. Offer Drs. Ian Daniels, UK, and Marcos de Areu Bonardi $3,000 each to come to the ASCRS Annual Meeting in 2006. Dr. Ian Daniels will be the alternate for the Fellowship Grant if Drs. Samalavicius or Basany cannot accept it.

Consensus: Combine the Fellowship Application and the Travel Scholarship Application into one and provide a check box to indicate which application it applies.

Consensus: Consider revising the matching funds for the Travel Scholarship to include hospitals, government organizations and unmatched funding where applicable.

  13. Committee Members
  14. Consensus: Consider inviting the following physicians to the next ICCP meeting:

    • Dr. Alexander Herold
    • Dr. John Nichols
    • Dr. Roland O’Connell
    • Denis Nyam from Singapore
  15. Committee Meetings
  16. Dr. Wolff suggested that the ICCP meet in conjunction with other international meetings as well as the ASCRS Annual Meeting. This would assist international colleagues to attend the ICCP meetings and better promote the mission of the ICCP.

Dr. Lowry suggested that future meetings concentrate on issues in colorectal surgery which the committee believes are important to undertake. The committee could pick one or two from this list to work on over the next few years.

Dr. Lowry suggested that the ICCP could extend an invitation to colleagues who will attend the Tripartite Meeting for breakfast, lunch or a reception to inform them of the work of the ICCP.

The meeting adjourned at 4:00 pm, Sunday, May 1, 2005.
