ASCRS International Fellowship
Dear Doctor:
Enclosed is an application form for the INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP. The ASCRS Executive Council has voted to fund this Fellowship for $US6,000. All application forms must be typewritten and in English. Each item must be filled in completely.
Required documents to be submitted:
1. The completed Application Form.
2. Two letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation must be in English. One letter should be from the Chairman of the Department in which the applicant holds an (academic) appointment or from a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons residing in the applicant’s country. Such letters should include specific information detailing the nature and extent of teaching, research, and any other academic activity. These letters should be submitted in sealed envelopes with the application form.
3. The completed form on Current Activity Profile.
4. A list of all publications in scientific journals and books.
5. A list of presentations made at National or International meetings.
Please note, the individual should be a person who demonstrates potential forachieving a leadership position in colon and rectal surgery.
The application for the International Fellowship must be received in the office no later than March 31. It is suggested that the application be submitted by email in advance so that you will be able to remedy any omissions which may exist. Any change in your address should immediately be reported to the office. Please submit the application to the following address:

Purpose
To provide a surgeon, residing outside of the U.S. and Canada, who has demonstrated a strong interest in colon and rectal disease and who demonstrates potential for achieving a leadership position in colon and rectal surgery with an opportunity to visit clinical, teaching, and research activities in north American and to attend and participate in the Annual Meeting of the American Society of colon and Rectal Surgeons.
Eligibility
The candidate should:
- Have completed training at least in general surgery, preferably colorectal surgery or have some colorectal expertise already in hand.
- Have a manifested interest in colon and rectal surgery as evidenced by practice, teaching, research or writings.
- Have a minimum of two years specialty colorectal practice experience to gain maximally from the visit and have sufficient experience to share with others. The surgeon should clearly define a benefit to be gained from this experience.
- Have a commitment from a center or centers that would be willing to host the recipient.
The candidate is encouraged to submit a podium or poster presentation at ASCRS’ Annual Meeting.
Selection Process
The candidate should:
- Be proposed in writing by the chair of his/her department
- Provide two other letters of support from senior individuals with whom he/she has worked. A recommendation from a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons would be helpful if that individual is known to a Fellow.
- Provide his/her curriculum vitae
- Write a letter stating his/her background, goals for the visit, such as a desire to promote colorectal surgical services back home, future career plans, sites and individuals desired to visit.
The proposals will be:
- Reviewed by the Executive of the International Council of Coloproctology
- Further discussed by the Council of ICCP
- ASCRS Council will review the committee’s recommendations from ICCP, the top candidate being offered the scholarship first.
Length of Stay
- The length of stay will be four weeks
- The candidate will receive complimentary registration to the annual meeting of The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons
- Assistance will be available in arranging visits to various clinics and centers of their choice
Estimated Cost
The overall cost ($US6,000) might be reduced if some accommodation and food would be borne by the institution visited by the individual.
Responsibility of Selected Individual
- Give at least 3 different presentations throughout the visit.
- Keep a daily log of activities, sites, and individuals visited and observations made
- Provide the ICCP, in turn, the ASCRS Council with a report
- Report travel experience in Diseases of the Colon and Rectum or highlighted in the ASCRS Newsletter.
