Dr. Orkin is a practicing colon and rectal surgeon on the full-time faculty of Tufts University. He currently serves as Chief of the Colon & Rectal Surgery Department.
Dr. Orkin received his Bachelor's Degree from The University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, received his Medical Degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and performed his internship at UCLA and his general surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He completed Fellowships in gastrointestinal research at the Mayo Clinic and then in colon and rectal surgery at The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Dr. Orkin is an acknowledged authority on colorectal surgery and has published numerous research and review articles and chapters in his field. Topics have included surgery for colon and rectal cancer, hemorrhoids, the role of surgery in constipation and functional anorectal disorder, and perineal manifestations of HIV infection. He has served as a guest lecturer and professor at many national and regional meetings and for the Dutch Surgical Society in Rotterdam, and for the National Hepatobiliary & Enteric Surgery Research Center in Changsha, Hunan, China.
Dr. Orkin currently serves on many medical boards and committees. He is currently an associate examiner for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and is the chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is also active in the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and the American Motility Society. He recently completed a long term as chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of the United Ostomy Association.
Dr. Orkin belongs to numerous professional societies and hospital committees, and has received numerous honors and awards including the United Ostomy Association's "Presidents Award" in 1997, and was named among "The Best Doctors in America" in 1997.
