Herand Abcarian, MD, FACS

Professor and Chairman

Herand Abcarian, MD, FACS is the Turi Josefsen Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. He also serves as an attending surgeon at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital and St Luke's Medical Center.

His extensive experience includes serving as Chairman, Division of Colon and Rectal Surgeon and Program Director of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency at Cook County Hospital. He is a past president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and currently serves as the Executive Director of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Dr. Abcarian is a member of many medical professional societies including the American Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Dr. Abcarian has spoken extensively on medical and surgical issues, including the surgical treatment of constipation, benign anorectal diseases, surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease and the operative treatment of rectal cancer. In addition, has authored or co-authored over 100 publication in refereed journals and published chapters in 20 medical books. He has been awarded Best Scientific Paper several times, Best Paper by a Member and Best Scientific Exhibit by the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Dr. Abcarian earned his Bachelor's and Medical Degrees from the Tehran University School of Medicine, and completed his internship and residencies in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery though the Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
