John MacKeigan, MD, FRCS(C), FACS, is a past president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Michigan State University and staff surgeon of the Ferguson Clinic in Grand Rapids. Named one of Good Housekeeping Magazine's "Top 318 Cancer Specialists for Women" in March 1999, he has contributed significantly to his field.
Dr. MacKeigan also is a staff member of Blodgett Memorial Medical Center, Saint Mary's Hospital, Metropolitan Hospital and Butterworth Hospital.
In addition to being actively involved with American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Dr. MacKeigan is a member of various other professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He has served as president of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and Chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Colon and Rectal Surgery for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Educator (ACGME). He serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Michigan State Medical Society and on the Board of Directors of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan.
Dr. MacKeigan has conducted lectures for many national medical organizations and universities, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and the Congress of the Asian Federation of Coloproctology. These presentations have covered such topics as ischemic colitis, anorectal surgery, hemorrhoids, and screening for colon and rectal cancer. He has also authored or co-authored almost 50 publications and edited two books.
After earning his Medical Degree and completing a general surgery residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dr. MacKeigan completed his residency in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Ferguson Clinic in Grand Rapids, MI.
