E. CARSEP VIII – Available for sponsorship in 2010 - 2011.
One of the most important functions of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons is to provide continuing medical education for its members, and others interested in diseases of the colon and rectum. ASCRS is cognizant of the fact that physicians must assess their knowledge/competency in order to improve performance and thus improve patient outcomes. As such, CARSEP (Colon and Rectal Surgery Education Program) has been offered since 1973.
CARSEP is comprised of over 250 “original” questions/answers, critiques and references. The Syllabus is designed as a study vehicle preparatory to taking the self-assessment exam. The questions are based on the competency categories from the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. The syllabus is used for MOC and is a tool to improve competency and meant as an intervention to close gaps, improve performance and thus, patient outcomes.
The program is aimed at continuous improvement in practice and life-long learning. CARSEP is the major component of MOC part 2, which is a tool for self-assessment evaluation. ASCRS is working in consort with the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and requires diplomats to participate in this program at least twice during the ten year MOC interval. CARSEP is updated every 3-4 years.
CARSEP is developed in accordance with ACCME and AMA requirements and consists of all new questions and images. Where appropriate, the ASCRS practice parameters and Cochrane reviews are referenced. ASCRS believes this to be an excellent tool in the physician’s ongoing self assessment.
