Case mix/number of cases: Anorectal 160-200; Fiberoptic endoscopy 500; Sigmoidoscopy 150; Abdominal colon procedures 200/year for program.

Strengths of program: There is a high surgical volume with good mix of cases. There are 8-10 conferences per month as listed below. The resident takes call from home and weekend call is on average once a month.

Clinic or office experience: There is an active outpatient clinic run by the resident. In addition he/she obtains six months of private office experience.

Interaction with general surgery residents: A PGY-4 and PGY-3 general surgical resident rotates through the Colon & Rectal Surgery Department at all times.

Conferences: There are three one-hour lectures monthly, a book conference twice monthly, GI cancer conference twice monthly, radiology conference weekly, journal club bimonthly and pathology conference bimonthly.

Anorectal physiology availability: There is an active GI physiology lab

Outside rotations: None are offered.

Research year: None is available, but an animal laboratory is available for procedures or research projects.

Requirement for paper: A paper and/or a presentation at the Texas Medical Association Annual Meeting or the North Texas Chapter of ACS is encouraged.

Opportunity to attend meetings: Expenses are paid to attend ASCRS Convention. Attendance at other meetings requires the presentation of a paper.
