Case Mix/Number of cases: The Colon and Rectal Surgery Division performs over 3500 fiberoptic endoscopic procedures a year which includes over 1850 colonoscopies. On an average 500 abdominal colon cases are performed. Approximately 600 anorectal procedures are performed a year.

 

Strengths of the Program: A large referral base provides the Colon and Rectal resident with an opportunity to care for patients afflicted with a broad spectrum of pathology. All training in endoscopy is done within the Division and all inpatient surgery is performed at a single 900 bed hospital. Continuity of surgical care is strongly emphasized.

 

Clinic or office experience: The resident has clinic responsibilities 2 days a week. Additional time is spent for endoscopic procedures and ambulatory surgery.

 

Interaction with general surgery residents: One PGY-1 and one PGY-5 general surgery residents rotate on the service throughout the year from the General Surgery Residency Program at Henry Ford Hospital. A nurse case manager assists with patient scheduling and inpatient care.

 

Conferences: Colon and Rectal Surgery conferences are held twice a week. There is a weekly Department of Surgery mortality and morbidity conference. Gastrointestinal Tumor Board is held weekly. There is also a weekly joint Gastrointestinal, Pathology, Radiology and Surgery case presentation conference.

 

Anorectal physiology availability: Available studies include anal manometry, EMG, defecography, and endorectal ultrasound.

Requirement for paper: The resident is expected to submit a paper for a national meeting and prepare a paper for publication.

 

Opportunity to attend meetings: The resident is encouraged to attend the ASCRS annual meeting. A travel stipend is provided. A presentation at an approved meeting would also be funded.
