Case mix/number of cases:

  • 1500 abdominal cases
  • 500 anorectal cases
  • 3000 colonoscopies
  • 100-150 re-op cases

Strengths of the Program:

  • Tertiary referral center for 19 system-wide Long Island Hospitals
  • 12 ABCRS certified surgeons performing complex and routine abdominal and anorectal cases daily as well as colonoscopies, office procedures and patient encounters
  • Large volume of IBD Surgery:
  • Pelvic pouches
  • Primary and re-operative
  • Complex anorectal cases
  • Laparoscopic Colon and Rectal Surgery
  • Ancillary services: IR, Enterostomal therapist, IBD pathologists, perioperative services

Clinic and Office Experience:

  • Formal office hours with Attending based on rotation site
  • Actively involved in pre- and post-operative decision analysis
  • Active role in office based procedures

Interaction with General Surgery Residents: Close involvement with a full compliment of general surgery residents.

  • Colorectal Lecture Series weekly
  • General Surgery M&M weekly
  • General Surgery Grand Rounds weekly
  • Colorectal Journal Club monthly
  • Colorectal Quarterly Visiting Professor
  • NYSCRS quarterly

Anorectal Physiology:

  • Manometry
  • EMG
  • Pudendal Nerve Latency
  • Endorectal U/S
  • Experience with all gained as all procedures are performed in the office setting twice monthly

Outside Rotations: 3 months intervals alternating between North Shore and LIJ

Research year: At present not offered or required

Opportunity to attend meetings:

  • All local and regional society meetings
  • ASCRS meeting
  • Resident may attend any national meeting that accepts his/her paper as a podium presentation

Requirement for publication: Resident must submit at least one abstract for presentation to the ASCRS annual meeting
Resident expected to present research project at NYSCRS
