Case mix / number of cases: The resident will be involved with approximately 125 abdominal colon procedures, 250 anorectal procedures, and 250 colonoscopies.
Strengths of program: The program primarily utilizes Swedish Medical Center, a major tertiary referral hospital for the Pacific Northwest, and Northwest Hospital, a busy modern community hospital. In addition, the resident's experience may be complemented by participation in selected cases at University Hospital, with full time faculty from the University of Washington.
Clinic or office experience: Office experience is obtained with each of the staff surgeons in their clinical practice. This affords the resident opportunity to be involved with pre-op planning, post-op care, as well as office procedures including flexible sigmoidoscopy.
Interaction with general surgery residents: Occurs primarily with residents at Swedish Medical Center through conferences and clinics, as well as with residents from the University of Washington.
Conference: Include Colorectal Conference, Journal Club General Surgery M&M, Tumor Board, and GI Conference, which often involve Radiology and Pathology.
Anorectal physiology availability: Done with one of the faculty at adjacent Swedish Hospital Medical Center.

Requirement for paper: Submission of an abstract for presentation at the ASCRS is encouraged.
Opportunity to attend meetings: Residents will be given the opportunity to attend the ASCRS meeting or any national meeting at which they are presenting, as well as meetings of the Northwest Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the annual February conference in Ft. Lauderdale.
