Number of Residents (per year):   1

Number of Faculty (ABCRS Certified):  4

Salary/Year: $51,412

Case mix/number of cases:   The resident will perform approximately 250-300 abdominal (25% or more are laparoscopic) and 200-250 anorectal cases.  The service performs both fiberoptic and rigid sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.  The resident will have the opportunity to perform 150-200 colonoscopies and 200 sigmoidoscopies.

Strengths of program:   This is a strong academic program in a university hospital with a good mix of complex tertiary referral cases but also more routine anorectal disease.  We have a strong research program in IBD and are a referral center for these complex patients.  This gives the resident an excellent exposure to the management of IBD.  In addition we have a strong colon and rectal cancer program with a large patient population and multidisciplinary care.  Laparoscopy is performed for cancer and benign conditions.

Clinic & Office Experience: The resident will be expected to attend clinic with the attending to which he/she is currently assigned, approximately 1-2 days/week.  During clinic the resident will see and evaluate new patients, post-operative patients, and follow-ups.  Rigid proctoscopy, anoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and other minor procedures are performed in the clinic.

Interaction with general surgery residents:  In addition to the colon and rectal resident there is a PGY5, PGY2, and 2 PGY1 residents on the service.  The colon and rectal resident will be part of the team and interact with the residents and medical students on a daily basis.  The colon and rectal resident will be expected to assist in and teach the junior residents in the daily care of the patients.  He/she will also be expected to provide formal and informal teaching sessions to the residents and medical students on the service.

Conferences: There is a weekly didactic lecture series in colon and rectal surgery.  The resident will be expected to prepare a topic for this conference once a quarter.  In addition there is a weekly pre-operative conference at which the next weeks cases are discussed.  The Division of colon and rectal surgery participates in the weekly general surgery M+M conference.  There are also monthly IBD conferences, GI tumor board, and journal club meetings.  There are 1-2 visiting professors/year at which time additional conferences are organized and the resident will have time to interact with our guests.

Anorectal physiology availability:  Anorectal manometry, defecography, and endo anal/rectal ultrasound are routinely performed.  The resident will be involved in the performance of (especially US) and the interpretation of the studies.

Outside Rotations:  There are no rotations outside the main institution.

Research year: There is a very active colon and rectal surgery research laboratory studying the genetics and pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease.  An additional research year for those interested is available either before or after clinical training.

Requirement for paper: The colon and rectal resident will be expected to write at least one paper for submission to a major journal.  They will also be expected to submit their data to the ASCRS annual meeting for consideration for presentation.

Opportunity to attend meetings: Funds will be provided for the resident to attend the ASCRS annual meeting and any other meeting at which they have a presentation.
