Case mix/number of cases: Anorectal-150 (wide variety), Abdominal colon procedures-100 to 150 including IPAA and colo-anal, Colonoscopy-1000 to 1500 per year & Laproscopic surgery.
Strengths of program: Program offers a wide variety of clinical cases, extensive exposure to colonoscopy and a variety of invasive colonoscopic procedures including use of laser. Program is oriented toward clinical practice of colon and rectal surgery.
Clinic or office experience: Program offers supervised experience in our colon and rectal clinic as well as in private offices. Wide exposure to office proctology is provided during the year.
Interaction with general surgery residents: One or two general surgical residents rotate on service giving C&R residents an opportunity to teach.
Conferences: Monthly morbidity and mortality conference, journal club, and topic discussions are held. Resident is encouraged to attend general surgery rounds and general surgery morbidity and mortality conferences.
Anorectal physiology availability: Anorectal physiology laboratories are available and two colon and rectal surgeons are actively involved in doing all varieties of manometric procedures, rectal ultrasound and biofeedback.
Outside rotations: None are offered.
Research year: None available.
Requirement for paper: Resident is encouraged but not required to write a paper during year of colon and rectal training.
Opportunity to attend meetings: The resident attends the colon and rectal review course at the University of Minnesota and the ASCRS convention.
