The operative experience include over 75 laparoscopic colon resections, experience with single port access, robotic resections and TEMs excisions. Ano-rectal surgery includes a broad array of “traditional” approaches as well as use of biologic agents for fistula disease and “LIFTs,” PPHs, THDs and advancement flaps. Endoscopic cases include diagnostic and therapeutic measures including polypectomies and stent placements.
Strength of program: The program provides an excellent balance of abdominal, advanced laparoscopic, anorectal and endoscopic procedures. Procedures are performed in both the hospital and office setting. Geographically located in central New Jersey, it provides easy access to the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
Clinical or Office Experience: Exposure to a broad spectrum of office procedures is provided. The opportunity to work with our attending physicians give residents direct patient care experience. Ligating and sclerosing internal hemorrhoids, excising thrombosed hemorrhoids, draining abscesses, treating fistulas and fissures, and performing rigid and flexible procedures are routinely performed.
Interaction with General Surgical Residents: Colon and Rectal Fellows interact with junior surgical residents and participate in conferences at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. At Overlook Medical Center, a participating site, colo-rectal fellows interact with surgical residents from Columbia University.
Conferences: Didactic conferences are provided by faculty each Wednesday during protected time. Additionally, monthly Journal Club, morbidity and mortality, CARSEP review and Tumor Board conferences are held. Monthly pathology conferences are also held.
Anorectal physiology availability: The anorectal physiology lab provides residents the opportunity to participate and perform intra-rectal ultrasound, ano-rectal manometry, pudendal nerve testing, defacography, and transit studies. Biofeedback is also available for patients and is included in the educational experience of residents.
