Case MIX/number of cases: A diverse balance of approximately 2,000 laparoscopic, abdominal, anorectal and endoscopic procedures.
Strength of program: The program provides an excellent balance of abdominal, advanced laparoscopic, anorectal and endoscopic procedures. Procedures are performed in both the hospital and office setting. Residents gain experience and insight interacting with a private patient population in an office based clinical environment and participating in practice management and administrative discussions. Geographically located in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas provide unique cultural, social, and employment opportunities.
Clinical or Office Experience: Exposure to a broad spectrum of office procedures is provided. The opportunity to work with our attending physicians give residents direct patient care experience Ligating and sclerosing internal hemorrhoids, excising thrombosed hemorrhoids, draining abscesses, treating fistulas and fissures, and performing rigid and flexible procedures are routinely performed. Weekly participation in our community clinic further broadens the scope of experience offered.
Interaction with General Surgical Residents: Colon and Rectal Fellows interact with junior surgical residents and participate in conferences at the University Hospital.
Conferences: Monthly colorectal division meetings include formal lectures by invited speakers, residents or attending physicians followed by a Journal Club and presentation of morbidity and mortality. Residents attend the morbidity and mortality conferences of the Department of General Surgery. Education programs exist for pathology and radiology in addition to monthly Tumor Board conferences at the medical school.
Anorectal physiology availability: The anorectal physiology lab provides residents the opportunity to participate and perform intra-rectal ultrasound, ano-rectal manometry, pudendal nerve testing, defacography, and transit studies. Biofeedback is also available for patients and is included in the educational experience of residents.
Outside Rotations: None are offered at present.
Research Year: No funding available at present.
Requirement for Paper: Residents are required to prepare a paper for presentation and publication during the academic year.
Opportunity to attend meetings: All residents attend the meetings of the New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the New Jersey Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Pennsylvania Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Residents attend the annual American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Meeting as well as one other educational meeting during the year. The residents are encouraged to attend local meetings which involve diseases of the colon and rectum sponsored by both surgery and gastroenterology societies.
