Sunday, June 11
Magnum Opus: Surgical Techniques from Around the World is available for member viewing. Video recordings on Sunday also include the didactic portion of Advanced Endoscopy and a number of abstract sessions.

Monday, June 12
Dr. Patricia Roberts’ presidential address is one of the highlights of Monday’s recordings. Also featured is the Harry E. Bacon, MD, Lectureship, New Technologies and others.

Tuesday, June 13
The Masters in Colorectal Surgery Lectureship honoring David A. Rothenberger, MD, is one of several highlighted recorded sessions on Tuesday. Also available are Reducing Surgical Site Infections, the Parviz Kamangar Humanities in Surgery Lectureship and ERAS: Taking Your Enhanced Recovery Program (ERP) to the next level.

Wednesday, June 14
The 2017 ASCRS Annual Scientific and Tripartite Meeting wraps up with sessions such as Optimizing Pain Management in Acute and Chronic Disease, the Ernestine Hambrick, MD, Lectureship the Research Forum and General Surgery Forum.

Annual Meeting Awards

The ASCRS Awards represent the best scientific presentations at the Annual Meeting. The Awards Committee is charged with evaluating all of the scientific presentations for scientific merit, study design, conclusions, timeliness, and clarity of presentation.  Committee members meet daily during the Annual Meeting and attend all scientific and poster sessions to evaluate each presentation. Congratulations to the recipients of the 2017 ASCRS Awards!

Awards and Distinguished Lectureships

Each year ASCRS members are asked to present prestigious lectureships at the ASCRS Annual Meeting. Others receive awards recognizing their invaluable contributions to the specialty of colon and rectal surgery. The 2017 lectureship presenters and award recipients represent invaluable contributions to the specialty.

Public Relations Committee Announced Award Winners

David Jagelman, MD, Award for Advocacy in Colorectal Cancer

ASCRS presented the 2017 David Jagelman, MD, Award for Advocacy in Colorectal Cancer to George Kiel III, founder, president and executive director of Kiel Colon Cancer Foundation based in Austin, Texas. The award was presented by ASCRS Public Relations Committee Chair, Dr. Roberta Muldoon during the Society’s Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA.

Kiel Colon Cancer Foundation’s mission is to decrease the number of preventable deaths caused by colon cancer through education and awareness initiatives, and by encouraging healthy lifestyle choices and supporting colon cancer research. 


Rectal Cancer Advocate Receives Local Hero Award

Rectal Cancer survivor Doug Dallmann was honored with the 2017 Local Hero Award, presented by the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), at a ceremony during the organization’s Annual Scientific and Tripartite Meeting on June 11 in Seattle, WA.   

The award recognizes a patient who was affected by a colorectal disease, has contributed to the local community through advocacy or public outreach efforts and has a message for others. Local Hero award recipients are selected from the regional area where the ASCRS Annual Meeting is held. Doug Dallmann shares his story of lving life to the fullest as a rectal cancer survivor with a permanent ostomy in a moving video.

Fun Run

With the beautiful Myrtle Edwards Park in the background, more than 100 runners participated in the Fun Run on Sunday, June 11. Proceeds from this event benefited the Ostomy Supply Closet, a local organization that provides ostomy supplies to those in need. Winners of the Fun Run were Lexine Yurheo and Tom Penoyar.

#ASCRS17 Scavenger Hunt Winner

Dr. Jasper Stijns was the winner of the Social Media Committee’s ASCRS 2017 Social Media Scavenger Hunt. Participants were asked to complete three of five tasks that involved taking photographs of themselves throughout the Annual Meeting, and then posting the photographs to Twitter with the hashtags #ASCRShunt and #ASCRS17.
