Webinar Description and Learning Objectives:

With the introduction of new medications and a better understanding of pathophysiology, surgical care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is quickly evolving. One area with many changes is for those with ileal Crohn’s disease. The long-term outcomes for these patients who undergo surgery have significantly shifted care management on a global level. In this webinar, panelists will discuss these changes, including for those in everyday gastroenterological and colorectal practice. Panelists will also examine the controversy concerning the creation of anastomosis for these patients: Earlier data from the Kono-S anastomosis trial suggests much better short- and long-term outcome while data from more recent multicenter trials question that approach, once again generating significant discussion on how to approach this patient population. As part of minimizing perioperative outcomes, panelists will also address data on elemental nutrition, including recent multicenter trial findings that support the use of elective appendectomies in patients with ulcerative colitis to help better control of the disease.

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss a “surgery first” versus “medicine first” approach in ileal Crohn’s disease
  2. Identify strategies to decrease complications in ileal Crohn’s disease surgery
  3. Examine approaches to anastomosis in surgery for ileal Crohn’s disease
  4. Discuss pros and cons of elective appendectomies in patients with ulcerative colitis
