What is Mentor Match?

Mentor Match is a unique program designed to facilitate members looking to secure a mentor.  The program allows younger colorectal surgeons to be matched with seasoned, experienced colorectal surgeons to facilitate a professional relationship and to provide career guidance.  The Mentor Match program provides a unique relationship between general surgery residents and colon and rectal surgeons.  No matter what type of mentoring is established, both parties will learn from each other.

Is there a fee to join?

Mentor Match is a benefit of ASCRS membership and is available only to members. There is no fee to use this resource.

What is the time commitment to be a mentor or mentee?

You may select the time frame of communications comfortable for you when you complete your profile. One of the match criteria is “Frequency of Communication” so you will be paired with someone who matches how often you wish to communicate with each other.  The mentor and mentee will determine when the mentoring relationship is no longer necessary.  There are no time constraints built into the program as the decision to discontinue the relationship will be made personally by the mentor and mentee.

How Does Mentor Match work?

If you wish to be a mentor or someone who seeks a mentor (mentee), click on the Join Now link to create a profile. Once your profile is complete, the matching process begins based on the search criteria provided. When matches are made, they appear in the “My Membership Requests” section at the bottom of the Mentor Match page. When matches appear, you can click on the person’s name to view their profile. If you wish to be matched with that person, click “Send Request.”

What happens after a mentor or mentee accepts my request?

You may begin communicating outside of the Mentor Match program using email or phone calls to communicate depending upon your preferred method of communication.  All communications with the mentor/mentee will be done on personally once the match is confirmed in the Mentor Match program.

If you would like your name to be removed from additional searches, please unclick the “Allow Mentor Requests” box. Some may choose to do this after they have been matched to a mentee, and they temporarily do not want their name to be available for additional matches. If you would like to mentor several mentees, please leave your “Allow Mentor Requests” checked so that your account will display in mentee searches.  You may click on “Allow Mentor Requests” at any time to allow your profile to be available for matches.

May I have more than one mentor or mentee?

Mentors may choose to be a mentor for several mentees, and mentees may also choose to communicate with multiple mentors, depending on search results. Before agreeing to mentor multiple mentees, consider your time constraints and desired level of engagement.
