This module describes the safe techniques for the extraction of foreign bodies that are retained after transanal insertion.

Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:

  • Approach the work-up for a patient with a retained rectal foreign body.
  • Determine which approach is optimal: transanal versus transabdominal.
  • Utilize safe techniques for transanal extraction.

As a Core Subject, this module is eligible for 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. This module serves as an update on foreign bodies for colorectal surgeons.
